Oak Processionary Moths

Oak processionary moth caterpillars present a high risk from May – July. They are covered in long hairs that can cause itchy rashes and  eye and throat irritation to both humans and animals and should not be touched under any circumstances.

Should you come into contact with one, please call NHS 111, see a doctor or a vet for serious allergic reactions.

These moths also form silky white nests, ranging in size from as small as a 50 pence piece up to a melon. These nests discolour over the season, appearing dirty and brown by August.

The nests also contain the hairs, and should not be touched. The nests can be found on the trunk or the underside of branches of oak trees – nests can sometimes also fall to the ground.

Currently the only Oak Processionary Moths we know about are located in amenity space off Ancells Farm Drive, between Cherberry Close and Lime Drive. These trees have been treated and nests removed but please be mindful if accessing this area.
