Greening Fleet

What’s it about?

In September 2023 Fleet Town Council launched an exciting new project within Fleet called The Greening Campaign.

Put simply, the campaign aims to encourage and support local people and businesses to take easy and straightforward steps to reduce energy consumption and waste and tackle the immediate global challenges at a community level – the FIVE PILLARS listed below aim to respond to these challenges:

  • Space for Nature
  • Health & Wellbeing
  • Energy Efficient Warmer Homes
  • Waste Prevention
  • Cycle of the Seed

Waste Prevention

This programme encourages residents in the community to prevent waste. This is not about recycling waste or even reusing waste but how do we actually stop waste.

Fleet Repair Cafe

This Pillar saw the creation of the Fleet Repair Café, a community event run by volunteers, aiming to save waste from landfill. Held once a month, you can bring along electronic, mechanical and textile items to see if volunteers can fix it for you, which also saves you money you might have spent on a new item!

Fleet Repair Café is held on the first Saturday of the month inside The Harlington. Follow them on Facebook for upcoming dates or to ask questions.

Energy Efficient Warmer Homes

As a nation we need to reduce our energy consumption – the Greening Campaign has a programme to show how energy leaves our homes, increasing bills as it leaves.

Thermal Imaging

As part of this pillar, volunteers are offering free thermal imaging of Fleet residents’ homes – using special cameras they will be able to assess the outside of your home and show where you may be losing heat.

By identifying these areas, you can take steps to add insulation or make other improvements, which could help keep your home warmer and potentially save you money on your energy bills; the Greening Campaign has partnered with the Sustainability Centre and the Environment Centre to bring some easy solutions and information on grants available to help reduce energy loss.

Thermal imaging can obviously only be done in the winter months when the weather is cold enough, so if you live in Fleet and would like free thermal imaging done of your home please email: info@fleet-tc.gov.uk.
We’ll also need you to complete this imaging application form.

Cycle of the Seed

This pillar aims to encourage food growing in the community, open discussion around food security, and bring education around the issues connected to soil health.

As part of this pillar, volunteers will be arranging a variety of events, such as a seed swap, so stay tuned and keep an eye on our events page and social media.

Space for Nature

Nature needs our help: learn the skills to change spaces in the community and make a real difference for nature. As part of this pillar, supported by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, volunteers have completed a mapping walk across the community, looking for opportunities to improve and create space for nature. Stay tuned for more information!

Health and Wellbeing

A different climate is already bringing challenges to keeping ourselves active and well.

High temperatures over the last couple of years have showed how our bodies can be affected by even a small rise with increased heat raising risks of heat related illnesses.

Increasingly extreme weather and flooding affects people’s day to day lives, displaces other from their homes and causes disruption to vital health and support services.

Peoples mental health can also be affected by fears for the future.

The aim of this pillar is to raise awareness raising on keeping safe in changing times.
